Artwork by Chad Sperzel-Wuchterl
Chad grew up in a blue collar family in rural Wisconsin. His father was an architect and Chad spent much of his time participating in the construction of the homes his father created. Chad states,“As I worked outdoors I studied the images around me…the land…the materials used by contractors…the reaction these materials had to one another as well as the patina that only comes with age and weathering. I now reflect upon these experiences for inspiration to create the works presented here. I seek an understanding of the media relating to the environment as I look for the connections between art and my experiences. I need my works to have a sense of history and a spirituality that is contained in a moment that is unique and familiar.”
Chad’s process involves using multiple layers of plaster to create a desired composition. Once the plaster has dried,a series of layered oil paints (with the occasional found object) are applied to the plaster. Through the organic texture and color combinations embedded in these materials Chad conceives images that bring feelings of history, ritual and spirituality. These elements allow the viewer to have a connection to his body of work since they are able to bring individualistic sentiment to his creations.
